چکیده

In this paper, we consider the well-known modal logics K, T, K4, and S4, and we study some of their sub-propositional fragments, namely the classical Horn fragment, the Krom fragment, the so-called core fragment, defined as the intersection of the Horn and the Krom fragments, plus their sub-fragments obtained by limiting the use of boxes and diamonds in clauses. We focus, first, on the relative expressive power of such languages: we introduce a suitable measure of expressive power, and we obtain a complex hierarchy that encompasses all fragments of the considered logics. Then, after observing the low expressive power, in particular, of the Horn fragments without diamonds, we study the computational complexity of their satisfiability problem, proving that, in general, it becomes polynomial.

On the Expressive Power of Sub-Propositional Fragments of Modal Logic

Modal logic is a paradigm for several useful and applicable formal systems in computer science. It generally retains the low complexity of classical propositional logic, but notable exceptions exist in the domains of description, temporal, and spatial logic, where the most expressive formalisms have a very high complexity or are even undecidable. In search of computationally well-behaved fragme...

Sub-propositional Fragments of the Interval Temporal Logic of Allen's Relations

Interval temporal logics provide a natural framework for temporal reasoning about interval structures over linearly ordered domains, where intervals are taken as the primitive ontological entities. The most influential propositional interval-based logic is probably Halpern and Shoham’s Modal Logic of Time Intervals, a.k.a. HS. While most studies focused on the computational properties of the sy...

In 1979 Richard Statman proved, using proof-theory, that the purely implicational fragment of Intuitionistic Logic (M→) is PSPACEcomplete. He showed a polynomially bounded translation from full Intuitionistic Propositional Logic into its implicational fragment. By the PSPACE-completeness of S4, proved by Ladner, and the Gödel translation from S4 into Intuitionistic Logic, the PSPACE-completenes...

Complexity of the Logic for Multiagent Systems with Restricted Modal Context

In this paper we continue our research in computational complexity of fragments of a particular belief-desire-intention (BDI) logic for cooperative problem solving (CPS) called TeamLog. The logic in question combines propositional multi-modal logic to express static aspects of CPS with propositional dynamic logic used for dynamic aspects of CPS. We concentrate here on the static fragment of the...

Computational Aspects of Dependence Logic

In this thesis (modal) dependence logic is investigated. It was introduced in 2007 by Jouko Väänänen as an extension of first-order (resp. modal) logic by the dependence operator “p ̈q. For first-order (resp. propositional) variables x1, . . . , xn, “px1, . . . , xn ́1, xnq intuitively states that the value of xn is determined by those of x1, . . . , xn ́1. We consider fragments of modal dependenc...
